OMAC Belfast  Belfast

The Old Museum Arts Centre (OMAC) invited submissions for an open international competition for the design of a new purpose built Arts Centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The M+P concept was to create a beacon for the arts cultural quarter.

The building addresses two key axis across the site. The main frontage to Exchange Square, west aligns with the main public axis in front of St Anne's Cathedral northern elevation. The southern cross axis centres on the piazza to the new Turnus Ltd development. This will become in the new interactive heart of the cultural quarter, an indoor - outdoor space, an extension of the theatre into the public realm. M+P proposed a computer animated LED media screen southern elevation that would have broadcasted events and activities from within the building.

Both of the main axis cross within the building, generating the foyer and the vertical circulation shared between the arts and theatre spaces.

The Arts entrance has a scale to be identifiable from a distance and has clarity to be seen from afar. Its form will separate it clearly from the adjoining development and will complement the scale and architectural qualities of the Cathedral.
